Neosporin is a topical antibiotic ointment that is a combination of three medications – Neomycin, Polymyxin B and Bacitracin. Neopsporin is a very popular Over The Counter (OTC) topical antibacterial treatment for minor skin injuries and infections.
Neosporin is rarely used as an acne treatment. But Neosporin is frequently used to prevent infection and accelerate healing after draining an acne lesion (popping/lancing a pimple).
Neosporin does not appear to be an effective treatment for active acne symptoms. There is very few clinical research or patient reports that suggest Neosporin is an effective treatment for acne. This ineffectiveness may be because the acne-causing P. acnes bacterium has some level of natural resistance to each of the antibiotics included in Neosporin.
